Japanese Gardens

A garden of calm, depicting nature as art.

A Japanese garden is not just nature, it does not create itself just by being, it is, and always has been nature crafted by man. It is a form of architecture defined by nature.

The Japanese culture of gardens has its origins way back in the first urban settlements and palaces.  It is a way of bringing natural landscapes into the garden.  Obviously on a much smaller scale but using the natural beauty of nature.  The gardens are designed to instill a sense of beauty, tranquility and a calm, gentle coming together of man and nature.  They use unusal shaped rocks, weathered old trees, water flowing and beautifully delicate plants along with man made classic Japanese architecture and the effect is breathtaking.

In comparison, our gardens, although I love them, have a sense of busy, loud (with all the insects, birds etc.), bright and vibrant activity, which is so far away from the calm and tranquil natural beauty that a Japanese garden offers.

If you wish to establish a beautiful and serene Japanese garden around your home there is a great book that gives you guidelines on how to do this as well as one on how to create a Bonsai tree if you are interested. Click the links and have a look.

A Japanese garden is perfect for meditation and this is something to think of in advance when when designing yours. Don't leave it as an afterthought as it will never feel like it is part of the whole, whereas if planned in advance it becomes a vital part of the whole.

They say that Japanese gardens are a way for people to connect with nature and a way to man to find his place within nature and the universe.
